2018 - I now conduct my art practice under the name Mela Lock Fitzgibbon in order to personally honour my family of origin and as a broader statement in reclaiming invisible female generations lost through marriage.

August 2012 - The actual "making" part of a new body of work is in its fledgling stages. It is centred around the controlling, silencing and punishing devices and strategies used on women throughout certain periods of history. My research has been ongoing for considerable time, but now there is this burning desire to compile my findings and responses into cohesive exhibited work. As what seems a logical progression from my last solo show "Pent Up" which focused primarily on the corsetted female body, mind and identity, I now move onto the scold's bridle, the chastity belt, and the Golden Lotus Foot. My current studies in Gender and Sexuality at QUT are also informing my fascination with these misogynist practices. I will post updates on this site as my work develops, so I invite you to check back in over the upcoming months.

2012 has seen a return to painting ... a re-connect with my passion for colour relationship and the juicy sensuality of this gorgeous stuff "paint" and the personalities of well-used brushes. I am experiencing a stronger and more compelling pull towards greater abstraction and minimalism ...

but more on that later...

LEVEL is a Brisbane based ARI dedicated to showcasing the work of contemporary female emerging and early career Australian artists. LEVEL supports the development and exhibition of new work that is critically engaging by providing a space in which artists can experiment and play. Through exhibiting a combination of Brisbane-based and interstate artists, LEVEL seeks to contribute to and instigate a national dialogue surrounding issues relating to gendered practice.
